Mammilaria
|
The genus Mammillaria is one the largest genera, with some 300 species and subspecies. These cacti do not have apparent ribs; rather they have conical tubercles aligned vertically in much the same manner as ribs. Consists of a large group of cacti with no ribs. Instead, they have soft tubercles or teats which protrude from the plant body. (Actually, the name stems from the conical tubercles that resemble “nipples” or mammillary glands). Some Mammillarias also have a milky sap; hence the name. Usually wool or hair grows in axils between the tubercles. Small, bright flowers encircle the plant near the top like a perky spring bonnet.
